Message from the Chairman of the JSME Fluids Engineering Division
Akira Goto |
Welcome to our Home Page for the Fluids Engineering Division (FED) of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME). My name is Akira Goto from Ebara Research Co., Ltd, nominated to serve as the Chairman for the 86th Term (Fiscal Year 2008) of the FED. As of the end of Fiscal Year 2007, the number of members registered in the FED (the number of the first to third registrants for the FED) amounts to 6,740, which boasts the largest membership among all of the 20 technical divisions of the JSME. I strongly feel a sense of responsibility for the management of one of the major divisions of the JSME, supported by 33 members of Executive Committee and members of various other committees as well as all registered members. I am the first chairman from industrial circles in nine years and determined to aim at making the FED as attractive as possible for all the members from both industrial and academic circles.
l do feel that a new paradigm of research in academic circles and a new style of cooperation among industrial, academic and administrative circles are being looked for. I dare to mention here my own experience. One of my highly respectful senior persons once gave me words of encouragement, saying, "Every thing artificial you see is created with the application of mechanical engineering. Thus, you should grapple with problems with your highest pride and ambition." Amid the circumstances where there are a mountain of global-scale problems such as those related to the environment, energy, water and food, I believe that the candid desire of the members of this society is to contribute to the improvement of such problems in one way or another by gathering the wisdom from industrial, academic and administrative circles. The field of "fluids engineering" in particular will play an important role in various industries and academic fields and is highly expected to contribute to "product creation" and "value creation" that are useful to communities.
I believe that the key to further activate this Division rests with the enhanced FED activities at such occasions as (1) formation of research groups and working parties, (2) academic meetings, (3) technical seminars, and (4) journal publications and electric international journal, “Journal of Fluid Science and Technology (JFST)”, together with effective publicity activities using electronic media. The activation of FED research groups and working parties, leading to the "product creation” and “value creation,” is one of the important themes. Besides expecting spontaneous activation of the Division stimulated by such activities, I think it also necessary for the members on the side of the management of the FED to positively promote such activities with a solid vision of linking them to "product creation” and “value creation”
In light of the fact that my term of office as the Chairman of the FED is just for one year, things I could do within the term will be limited. Thus, I would like to aim at the management of the Division with continuity based on a mid-term viewpoint, thorough discussions with Executive Committee members as well as the affiliated committee members of the FED with the support and cooperation from all of the members. Your cooperation is, therefore, highly appreciated.
Finally, I would like to introduce the leaders of various FED committees as follows:.

- Chair of Technical Committee --- Prof. Masato FURUKAWA (Kyushu University)
- Chair of General Affairs Committee --- Prof. Hiroyuki HIRAHARA (Saitama University)
- Chair of Publicity Committee --- Mr. Shinichi OKA (C & I Inc.)

In respect of the academic meetings for this Term, we will hold the Annual Conference (from August 3 to 7 at Yokohama National University) and the 7th KSME-JSME Thermal & Fluids Engineering Conference which serves also as the FED Meeting (from October 13 to 16 at Hokkaido Citizens Activities Center), where I want you all to take part in and also solicit others to come to these conferences.
I would like to conclude my message by asking you again for your continued support and cooperation.
