Abstract:

Main interests in our group lie in internal complex flows of hydraulic machines (pumps and hydroturbines, etc.), and some fundamentals of fluid flow phenomena. Now we are conducting various studies such as complex fluid flow phenomena inside a multi-stage centrifugal pump, flow instabilities of cavitating pumps, and effective utilization of small hydropower as one of renewable energies. Also, we are investigating fundamental fluid flows related to the hydraulic machinery, particularly cavitation flows, which are liquid-vapor two phase flows with phase change, around a hydrofoil and those inside a two-dimensional convergent-divergent channel using both experimental and numerical approaches. In addition, some nanoscale phenomena related to cavitation such as bubble nucleation and non-equilibrium evaporation process are also studied using molecular dynamics simulations or theories. These studies on cavitation will be connected to development of more reliable prediction methods based on some physics-based appropriate models.
