Restoration of Cultural Monuments from the Kumamoto Earthquake – Damage, Repair and New Discovery of Cultural Values of Kumamoto Castle, and Brick Buildings of Kumamoto University –

Contents
The two earthquakes that hit the Kumamoto region in April 2016, both of which were large earthquakes with a seismic intensity of seven on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, caused extensive damage to historical buildings. Since then, the important cultural properties including Kumamoto Castle have been restored splendidly with sufficient subsidies for the repair costs and the latest structural reinforcement technologies. The important cultural buildings of Kumamoto University also had been restored and completed until March 2022 using the new technology that was developed in the restoration works of buildings damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Among them, the Museum of Engineering Faculty, which was a former Machine Experiment Factory, was severely damaged, with the front wall tilting and the joints of the bricks being displaced. However, the Museum was reinforced with the steel frames and revived splendidly. In addition, although damage such as the collapse of the chimneys occurred at Memorial Museum of the Fifth High School, an old blackboard was found from the class room during the investigation, leading to the discovery of new value.
On the other hand, how to rescue the undesignated cultural properties was a problem: First of all, a survey of damaged cultural properties was conducted by a system of so-called 'Cultural Property Doctors'. After that, the repair expenses were subsidized by the repair costs subsidy system established by Kumamoto Prefecture. As a result, many buildings are expected to be restored within the fiscal year of 2022. Both of the repair cost subsidy system and the repair techniques established in Kumamoto will certainly be inherited in the future restorations of historical buildings damaged by disasters that will occur somewhere in Japan.
